2014-PRESENT

December 18, 2017

George Clooney, Will Smith, Pharrell Williams, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp. Since seeing them on film from a young age till present I feel like none of those actors have aged and have constantly looked the same. Now before you argue with me I know things such as gravity and time do take place and yes, I know upon close inspection the actors I mentioned have aged, but not by much in my opinion. There are many physical things in this world as well that are timeless like the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, Pineapple on Pizza (Shut up and get over this one) and hamburgers. Weird examples yes, but point them out to anyone and it will be easily recognizable without any thought. Often when a designer creates anything in shape, size or form, he or she sets out to either make something that will be classic, futuristic or perhaps a current trend according to world standards. Sometimes though on rare occasions I see a design that can be best described as timeless. A design created with the sole purpose to age over time and to become better looking with age. The inspiration will be somewhat futuristic, odd looking but somehow relevant for its purpose which now brings me to two things of which one is very obvious, the BMW i8 and Benoit Jacob, the man responsible for designing the car. Can you believe that it was almost 4 years ago that this car was launched to the public? We do know that a facelift and potential Spyder is rumored but even so the only thing introduced since has been individual colours such as the one I had, Speed Yellow, this year which is superb! In fact this car deserved to have vulgar colours given to it. Many others are available too upon request. Having spent time with it, The car draws an immense amount of attention in fact so much so that it got to a point where I chose off peak times to use it. My peak hour drives were filled with jeers, whistles, screams and pointing which was pretty awesome for about an hour, thereafter I felt like a bit of an idiot showing off. It got to the point where after a while I didn’t care and simply carried on because after all, its a bright yellow two door sports car for goodness sake and well, you gotta let things like that just happen. Power comes from two sources, a peppy turbocharged 1.5 litre three cylinder engine which was borrowed from the MINI Cooper One and a 7.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which in total gives the car 266kW and 570Nm of torque, but wait there’s more. The i8 has a low weight, 1,485 kg and a low drag co-efficient of 0.26 and because science tells us that you do not need a lot of effort to move something with minimal weight with low resistance, you have a winning formula in the form of 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds and when tested will consume around an average of 8.4 litres per hundred in the real world. The price? A cool and casual R2 Million. Since day one, the BMW i8 was a hit providing impressive sales globally while stunning the world with its unique design and performance characteristics. The only drawback I could think of is the charging of it overnight, it does become a bit of a mission and often at times I forgot to do so, and when in sport mode where the car charges the battery using the engine, I found that the recovery time was incredibly long, however for the upcoming facelift rumor has it that the car will come with a more powerful engine and better yet, a bigger battery and faster charging recovery systems. Until then let’s take some time to appreciate the engineering and design of such a progressive sports car. It will go down in history as an iconic shape for the brand and potential bench mark for other mass manufacturers to make fun and exciting cars for the market.
